LG Welfare Foundation Appoints Gu Yeon-kyung, Eldest Daughter of Late Chairman Gu Bon-mu, as CEO

Gu Yeongyeong Named CEO of LG Welfare Foundation

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Gu Yeon-kyung, the eldest daughter of the late Gu Bon-mu, former chairman of LG Group, and sister of Gu Kwang-mo, chairman of LG, has been appointed as the new CEO of the LG Welfare Foundation.


According to the LG Yeonam Academy and LG Welfare Foundation websites on the 1st, Kang Yoo-sik was inaugurated as the new chairman of three public interest foundations?LG Yeonam Cultural Foundation, LG Yeonam Academy, and LG Sangnok Foundation?while Gu Yeon-kyung was inaugurated as the new CEO of the LG Welfare Foundation on the same day.


Chairman Kang is a distinguished professional manager of LG who joined LG Chem in 1972 and served as vice president of LG Semiconductors, president of LG Restructuring Headquarters, vice chairman and CEO of LG Corporation, and vice chairman of LG Management Development Institute. He has also served as auditor of LG Yeonam Cultural Foundation, LG Sangnok Foundation, and LG Yeonam Academy, and has been a director of LG Yeonam Academy since 2021.


CEO Gu Yeon-kyung, eldest daughter of the late Chairman Gu Bon-mu, majored in social welfare in both undergraduate and graduate school. She has accumulated over ten years of field experience working with various public interest organizations such as the global child rights NGO Good Neighbors, the multicultural education support group GLOBE, and the Hannam-dong Community Security Council, engaging in social contribution activities for local communities and marginalized groups. Since 2021, she has provided advice on social contribution projects for the LG Welfare Foundation based on this experience.


CEO Gu has consistently shown interest and gained experience in social contribution projects, and it is known that she decided to take on the foundation’s CEO position through board nomination as part of her commitment to contributing to society and serving local communities.


Since Chairman Gu In-hoe of Yeonam, Chairman Gu Ja-kyung of Sangnam, and Chairman Gu Bon-mu of Hwadam, LG has established and operated public interest foundations to return corporate profits and use them as a foundation for a society that grows together. According to LG public interest foundations, the new CEO and chairman were appointed as the right persons to inherit the founding purpose of each foundation and further develop LG’s social contribution projects.


Starting with the LG Yeonam Cultural Foundation (1969), LG has established and operated specialized public interest foundations in various fields such as culture, education, welfare, media, and environment, including LG Yeonam Academy (1973), LG Welfare Foundation (1991), LG Sangnam Media Foundation (1995), and LG Sangnok Foundation (1997). For over 50 years, these public interest foundations have supported scholarship programs, natural environment conservation projects, cultural and academic projects, support for marginalized groups, and awards for righteous individuals.
