[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Incheon Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 1st that it will conduct a survey on pesticide residue levels in soil and water at 11 golf courses in the region.

This survey aims to prevent soil and water pollution caused by pesticide use and will be conducted in two phases: the dry season (April to June) and the rainy season (July to September).

The institute will collect soil, pond water, and runoff water samples from the greens and fairways of all 11 golf courses, including the newly opened Songdo Park Golf Course in Yeonsu-gu last year, to test for pesticide residues.

The inspection items include 28 pesticide components: 3 highly toxic pesticides, 7 pesticides banned for turf use, and 18 general pesticides.

Incheon City plans to impose administrative measures such as fines under the Water Environment Conservation Act and the Pesticide Control Act if banned or highly toxic pesticides are detected.

Last year, the city surveyed pesticide residue levels in 150 soil samples and 57 water samples from 10 golf courses, and no highly toxic or turf-banned pesticides were detected.

An official from the Incheon Health and Environment Research Institute stated, "As sports activities, which had been stagnant due to COVID-19, gradually become more active, the number of golf course users is expected to increase. We will thoroughly investigate the use of highly toxic pesticides to ensure that users can exercise with peace of mind."
