Shinan-gun Improves Living Conditions and Tourism Infrastructure on Peace Island Haedo

Coastal Walkway Landscape Lighting, Indongcho Mural, and Small Vessel Mooring Installation

[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is making efforts to improve living conditions and secure tourism infrastructure, including holding a lighting ceremony for the Ungok Coastal Walkway on Haewido Island on the 24th.

The county was selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' General Rural Fishing Village Development Project in 2020, securing a budget of 8.8 billion KRW to improve poor basic living facilities in Ungok-ri, the central hub of Haewi-myeon, which consists of one main island and eight remote islands.

First, to facilitate fishing activities and create a pleasant living environment, projects are underway including the installation of a small vessel mooring dock at Ungok Port, replacement of old streetlights, remodeling of community facilities, murals at Indongcho, and color maintenance of buildings in the central area.

Recently, as domestic and international celebrities have visited Haewido, its recognition has increased, raising the need to attract longer-stay tourists.

Accordingly, landscape lighting was installed along a 700-meter section of the Ungok Coastal Walkway, the gateway to the island, creating a unique attraction with beautiful night views harmonized with the night sea, and establishing a healing space for healthy leisure activities for local residents.

A Sinan-gun official stated, “We plan to do our best to improve living conditions for distinctive landscape creation and resident welfare enhancement, establishing a community hub and increasing residents' income.”

Meanwhile, Haewido is a region with great potential to grow as a tourism hub, boasting abundant tourist resources such as the birthplace of the late Kim Dae-jung, the 15th President of the Republic of Korea, the Farmers' Movement Memorial Hall, Samdo Bridge, and the Big Rock Face, as well as seasonal seafood like abalone and octopus produced year-round.
