Highlighting the 'Harlem Culture Festival' from Over 50 Years Ago
Director Amear Calib Thompson's film Soul, Spirit, and Summer won the Best Feature Documentary award at the 94th Academy Awards held on the 27th (local time) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, USA. It achieved this feat by surpassing Stanley Nelson's Attica, Jonas Poher Rasmussen's Where Is My Home, Jessica Kingdon's Ascension, and Lintu Thomas's Shooting the World with a Smartphone. The film highlights the 1969 Harlem Culture Festival, a music festival held on the outskirts of New York. The event featured stars like Stevie Wonder and attracted 300,000 attendees, but was never broadcast on any channel due to being a festival for Black people. Director Thompson reveals vivid live footage after more than 50 years, showing why Black music at the time was called "soul."
