Why Did Officials from the New York Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Visit Seongsu-dong, Korea's 'Brooklyn'?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that from the 21st to the 22nd, a delegation of five executives from the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in New York, USA, visited Seongdong-gu.

Recently, Seongsu-dong in Seongdong-gu has gained popularity among young people and emerged as the "Brooklyn of Korea," making the visit by an actual delegation from Brooklyn to Seongsu-dong a meaningful encounter.

Seongsu-dong and Brooklyn share a commonality in that both areas, once semi-industrial zones with factories established for a long time, have transformed into cultural and artistic spaces such as cafes and galleries with unique vibes, as well as trend-leading shops.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce executives reportedly decided to visit Seongdong-gu after hearing that Seongsu-dong is nicknamed the "Brooklyn of Korea" and is compared to Brooklyn's development.

On the first day of the visit, a tour of Seongsu-dong and other areas was conducted. On the second day, the 22nd, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce executives met with Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, and had a discussion on topics such as the ESG administration that Seongdong-gu has proactively introduced and promoted recently, as well as prospects for future urban development plans.

In particular, Randy Peers, President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, expressed, "Brooklyn is a city focused on leading 'change,' and I felt a similar familiar vibe in Seongdong-gu."

Mayor Jeong Won-oh of Seongdong-gu also responded, "Given the similar historical backgrounds and the competitiveness to attract many people, we have aimed to develop Seongsu-dong with Brooklyn as a model," adding, "Now that the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce executives have visited Seongdong-gu, I believe better opportunities will arise between the two cities."

Seongdong-gu has actively promoted international exchanges even during the prolonged COVID-19 situation by holding video conferences with Cambodian cities to expand the scope of official development assistance (ODA) projects for economic development and social welfare improvement in developing countries, and by conducting friendly exchanges between the two cities' table tennis associations and youth choir performances using online platforms with its sister city, Huiyu District in China.

Mayor Jeong Won-oh of Seongdong-gu stated, "We will use this visit by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce executives as an opportunity to further publicize the name of Seongdong-gu, which has developed brilliantly including Seongsu-dong, the 'Brooklyn of Korea,' and to explore various cooperation plans in the future," adding, "Along with this, we will make our best efforts to become a 'Seongdong-gu in the world' by actively promoting online exchanges with currently partnered overseas cities and preparing various programs that residents can participate in."
