[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), said on the 24th (local time) that the likelihood of a full-scale war between Russia and NATO allies is low.
Secretary General Stoltenberg made this statement during a press conference following a special summit held in Brussels, Belgium, on the same day.
In response to a question about whether Poland had proposed sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, he said, "NATO has the responsibility to ensure that this conflict does not escalate into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO. This is also why NATO member countries have declared that they will not deploy troops to Ukraine."
He added, "If the war in Ukraine expands into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO allies in Europe, it would be more dangerous and destructive."
At the meeting that day, NATO extended Secretary General Stoltenberg’s term by one year, which was originally scheduled to end at the end of September.
Stoltenberg was initially expected to retire and serve as governor of the central bank in his home country, Norway, but due to the security crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, he has taken on the role again.
On Twitter that day, he stated, "I am honored by the decision of NATO leaders to extend my term," adding, "Facing the greatest security crisis in a generation, we are united to maintain a strong alliance and the safety of our people."
