Seoul City Cleans 103 Water Distribution Reservoirs at 'Tap Water Stations'... Also Conducts Facility Repairs

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 23rd that it will conduct cleaning of 103 water storage facilities starting in April to ensure the supply of clean tap water. During this cleaning, on-site inspections and facility repairs will also be carried out to create a safer water supply environment.

Water storage facilities are large water tanks that serve as a kind of "tap water supply station," through which tap water produced at water purification centers is stably supplied to each household. These facilities are large tanks installed in high-altitude areas near water supply zones, using natural flow methods to reliably supply tap water to households. Seoul manages 103 such water storage facilities containing 241 tanks, capable of storing 2,444,720 tons (㎥) of tap water, allowing uninterrupted water supply for up to 12 hours even during emergencies such as power outages.

Seoul manages a total of 103 water storage facilities and conducts periodic cleaning of all facilities twice a year (first half from April to June, second half from September to November) in accordance with the 'Water Supply Act' and the 'Water Supply Facility Maintenance Manual.' During cleaning, internal water stains in the tanks are thoroughly removed using high-pressure water washing, and the condition of internal and external wall structures, pipes, and valves are inspected and repaired as needed.

To minimize inconvenience to citizens caused by the cleaning of water storage facilities, cleaning will be carried out sequentially by each facility to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For facilities with two or more tanks, cleaning and water supply will be alternated between tanks. For facilities with a single tank, water supply will be maintained by rerouting water through pipes from adjacent water storage facilities during cleaning to prevent water outages.

After completing the cleaning of the water storage facilities, water quality tests will be conducted to verify compliance with inspection standards before resuming water supply. Gu Ami, Head of the Waterworks Business Headquarters, stated, "We will take measures to ensure that no areas experience water outages during the cleaning process to avoid any inconvenience in using tap water," and added, "We will do our best to thoroughly manage water quality and operate water supply facilities to reliably provide clean tap water."
