[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] Yeom Dong-yeol, a former member of the Future United Party (predecessor of the People Power Party), who was sentenced to one year in prison for abusing his position as a member of the National Assembly to influence the hiring of acquaintances at Kangwon Land, will be incarcerated on the 22nd.
According to legal circles, former lawmaker Yeom is scheduled to appear at the Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office Yeongwol Branch at 2 p.m. on the same day and then proceed with the admission procedures at Yeongwol Prison.
Although former lawmaker Yeom received a final ruling from the Supreme Court on the 17th, he requested a few days' extension from the prosecution due to health reasons, and the prosecution reportedly accepted this request.
Yeom, whose constituency was Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province, where Kangwon Land is located, was indicted on charges of pressuring Kangwon Land's HR team leader and others from November 2012 to April of the following year to unlawfully hire dozens of acquaintances or supporters' children during the first and second trainee selection processes. He was sentenced to one year in prison in both the first and second trials. Considering the spread of COVID-19 infections and the lack of flight risk, he was not detained in court.
The Supreme Court affirmed the lower court's ruling, stating, "There is no error affecting the judgment such as violating the rules of logic and experience by exceeding the limits of free evaluation of evidence, or misunderstanding the law regarding the power in the crime of obstruction of business, the object of the act, the third-party nature of the business, and co-conspirator liability."
