[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] ResearchAlum forecasted that the KONEKS company GeoC would benefit from the growth of the optical cable market.
Founded in 2001, GeoC is a manufacturer of optical fiber cables. It was listed on KONEKS in 2015. Optical fiber cables are cables for data transmission that convert large-capacity information and communication electronic signals (voice, video, data) into light for transmission. They can transmit data faster than copper cables that use electrical signals for communication.
Researcher Donghyun Lee of ResearchAlum explained, "The global 5G equipment market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 67%," adding, "Optical cables are essential equipment for building 5G infrastructure."
He continued, "Currently, the average penetration rate of optical cables in OECD countries is only 32%," and added, "Large-scale FTTH projects will be promoted worldwide, including in Indonesia, Europe, and CIS countries."
He emphasized, "France plans to invest trillions of won aiming for 20 million FTTH subscribers within five years," and "GeoC supplies optical cables to the largest telecommunications company in Europe together with local partners in France."
GeoC has entered the special-purpose optical cable market to secure new revenue sources. The researcher introduced, "Unlike conventional optical cables used for optical communication such as data transmission, special-purpose optical cables are manufactured for nuclear power plants, defense, or hacking prevention."
He added, "Optical cables used in nuclear power plants require high stability such as radiation resistance, moisture resistance, heat resistance, and high flame retardancy," emphasizing, "GeoC is the only company in Korea to have obtained international certification for nuclear power plant cables, proving its competitiveness."
The researcher analyzed, "It is also noteworthy that GeoC has expanded its business from the existing optical cable business to the optical sensor field."
Optical sensors are optoelectronic devices that convert optical energy or photons into electrical signals. They are components that can be used in various fields such as environment, bio, and medical. GeoC developed applied products by integrating optical sensors and technology. The optical water quality sensor connects sensors and cloud servers to remotely monitor water quality. It reduces the inconvenience of people having to collect water and go to a measurement system for water quality inspection.
The researcher explained, "It measures a total of eight water quality inspection items in real time to predict and prepare for red tide phenomena in advance," adding, "The utilization of optical sensors in the medical field is also limitless."
