"Only Looking at Daegu Citizens and Party Members"
"Will Remodel Daegu to Regain Glory"
On 'Downward' Controversy: "Unwarranted Nitpicking"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Hong Jun-pyo, a member of the People Power Party who had expressed his intention to run for mayor of Daegu, declared on the 16th, "I will announce my candidacy as soon as I am ready," showing his determination to push forward head-on.
On the same day, Hong posted on Facebook, "I know there is debate about my running for mayor of Daegu, but I will focus only on the citizens of Daegu and party members." He added, "As I was recently evaluated as the best governor among all elected governors of Gyeongnam in a Gyeongnam Newspaper poll, I will also remodel Daegu anew and restore the glory of Daegu, which is declining."
Regarding the recent controversy over the term 'habang,' he dismissed it, saying, "I understand there is criticism over the use of the word 'habang,' but those who do not know that it means strengthening local capabilities are just nitpicking unnecessarily." On the 10th, Hong declared his candidacy for mayor of Daegu on his online platform 'Dream of Youth,' stating, "I will leave central politics to President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol and focus on habang." Habang is a movement in China where party members or public officials are sent to rural areas or factories for a certain period, but in the Daegu region, it has been criticized as a derogatory expression.
