[Asia Economy Reporters Park Sun-mi and Jung Dong-hoon] Large corporations, which had suspended open recruitment due to the spread of COVID-19, are set to resume mass hiring in the first half of this year. Major companies such as Samsung, Hyundai Motor, LG, and POSCO have been announcing their plans for open recruitment one after another.

On the 13th, Samsung Electronics announced that 18 Samsung affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Biologics, Cheil Worldwide, Hotel Shilla, and S-1, will conduct open recruitment for the first half of 2022. Applications will be accepted until the 21st, followed by an online job aptitude test (GSAT) in May and non-face-to-face interviews in June.

Samsung is currently implementing a plan to hire 40,000 new employees over three years starting in 2021 to expand youth job creation. Initially, the plan was to hire 30,000 new employees over three years, but it was revised to increase by 10,000 to a total of 40,000 hires.

Vice Chairman Lee pledged to support the dreams of young people and create better jobs through the Youth Hope ON project video last December. He said to the youth, "As a senior to the younger generation in life, I feel a heavy responsibility for not creating a better world and more jobs as a businessperson," adding, "Samsung and I will invest more in technologies that do not exist in the world and areas where only we excel, and create better jobs."

Unlike other companies shifting to on-demand recruitment, Samsung maintains its open recruitment system, contributing to large-scale job creation, providing fair employment opportunities for youth, and nurturing talent. Samsung believes maintaining open recruitment is necessary for stability and predictability in the hiring market.

Samsung introduced Korea's first open recruitment in 1957, established open recruitment for female college graduates in 1993, and from 1995, innovatively reformed its hiring system by removing academic background requirements. Samsung plans to continue abolishing conventional discrimination based on final academic background, alma mater, gender, etc., and lead the spread of ability-based hiring culture while actively participating in expanding domestic youth employment.

An industry insider said, "Samsung's maintenance of open recruitment reflects its will to serve as a social safety net providing opportunities to youth, harmonizing internal demand for talent with social expectations as a form of social contribution," adding, "In a trend where companies are shifting to on-demand hiring, Samsung's open recruitment will be especially meaningful as a 'gateway' for young people who have graduated or are about to graduate from university to secure jobs."

Major affiliates of LG Group are also currently conducting recruitment for new college graduate employees in the first half of this year.

LG Electronics is recruiting 2022 internship positions linked to hiring by business division. Applications are accepted until this month, followed by an online aptitude test and interviews in April, with internships starting in the field in May. The internship period is at least four weeks, and final employment decisions are made based on evaluations of tasks and projects performed during the internship. Other affiliates such as LG Display, LG Energy Solution, and LG Uplus are also recruiting new employees.

Hyundai Motor Group is recruiting new employees across various business divisions of Hyundai Motor and Kia. Hyundai Motor Group has also announced plans to directly hire 30,000 people over three years, with about 16,000 of those jobs created through talent development and startup support.

POSCO Group affiliates, including POSCO, POSCO International, POSCO Engineering & Construction, POSCO Terminal, and POSCO Chemical, are conducting new employee recruitment for the first half of 2022. POSCO Group has also pledged to create 25,000 jobs over three years.

At SK Group, SK Hynix began recruiting new employees in February with a goal of triple-digit hires. SK Hynix plans to expand its hiring scale compared to previous years, considering improvements in the semiconductor market and facility investments. SK Group has expanded its annual new hiring plan from about 6,000 to 9,000, aiming to create approximately 27,000 youth jobs over three years.

Additionally, Hyundai Oilbank and Korea Expressway Corporation are currently recruiting new employees for the first half of the year, and other major companies are expected to join in recruitment efforts. Career recruitment is also actively underway.
