Kakao to Help Ukrainian Children... Donates 4.6 Billion KRW Together with Users

[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Kakao announced on the 4th that it will make a donation worth 4.2 billion KRW to support Ukraine, which is struggling due to conflict, and will run a donation campaign through its social contribution platform ‘Kakao Together’ to enable users to easily participate in donations.

Kakao decided to donate approximately 3 million units of the cryptocurrency ‘Klay’ (worth about 4.2 billion KRW) to UNICEF, an international child relief organization, to help children in Ukraine suffering from the war.

UNICEF has been running projects to save children’s lives in Ukraine for the past 25 years. Currently, over 130 UNICEF staff members are working in five regions of Ukraine, continuing child relief activities despite threats to their own safety. The donations will be used to provide therapeutic food and milk to prevent malnutrition in children, emergency first aid kits for treatment, water purification agents, soap, and other supplies to provide clean water.

In addition, Kakao’s social contribution platform ‘Kakao Together’ launched an emergency fundraising campaign for Ukraine on the 2nd, and with the response and rapid participation of over 150,000 users, approximately 430 million KRW has been raised so far.

The fundraising campaign is being conducted in collaboration with four relief organizations: UNICEF Korea Committee, Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association, Good Neighbors International, and M?decins Sans Fronti?res Korea. There are four donation boxes operating in total: ▲Helping Ukrainian children ▲Supporting Korean residents and Ukrainian citizens ▲Providing food and daily necessities ▲Medical support including treatment costs. Users who wish to participate can donate directly to the donation boxes on the campaign page or by writing comments at the bottom. Kakao will donate 1,000 KRW for each comment written, and an additional 100 KRW will be donated when users click to support or share individual donation boxes.

Starting from the 7th, Kakao Makers will sell two products expressing a wish for peace in Ukraine. These include a sweatshirt and a smartphone case featuring the colors and design of the Ukrainian flag, conveying a simple message opposing the war. All proceeds will be donated to help Ukrainian children.

Namgoong Hoon, the appointed CEO of Kakao, said, “We have made a meaningful donation to support Ukraine, where lives and safety are threatened. We hope that our sincere wish for peace and harmony will be conveyed, and we expect users to actively participate in donations through Kakao Together and Kakao Makers.”
