1000 Applications Received This Year at Jurisdiction Police Stations, Driver's License Test Centers, and Administrative Welfare Centers
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A program encouraging elderly drivers to voluntarily surrender their licenses is actively underway in Ulsan.
On the 27th, Ulsan City announced that it is accepting applications on an ongoing basis for the ‘Elderly Driver License Voluntary Surrender Support Project,’ jointly implemented with the Ulsan Police Agency.
The Elderly Driver License Voluntary Surrender Support Project targets senior citizens aged 65 or older (born on or before December 31, 1957) residing in Ulsan. Those who voluntarily surrender their driver’s licenses and have their licenses invalidated receive a 100,000 KRW transportation card.
Since its introduction in 2020, over two years until December 2021, the project far exceeded its initial support goal, with 2,956 seniors voluntarily surrendering their licenses and receiving transportation cards.
This year, the program is expected to be conducted for the first 1,000 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Those wishing to participate can visit an administrative welfare center in person to voluntarily surrender their license and immediately receive a transportation card. If the license is surrendered through a police station or a driver’s license examination office, the transportation card can be collected by visiting the relevant eup/myeon/dong administrative welfare center.
An official from Ulsan City stated, “This project is expected to play an important role in preventing traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers in the context of an aging society.”
Ulsan City is promoting various traffic safety policies, including expanding senior protection zones, providing on-site traffic safety education, and distributing traffic safety supplies, alongside the elderly driver license voluntary surrender support project, to ensure the rapidly increasing elderly population can live in a safe traffic environment.
