[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The Blue House has stated that there will be "no military support or dispatch of troops" regarding the Ukraine situation.

A Blue House official told reporters on the 23rd, "We hope to make greater diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and contribute to a peaceful resolution," expressing this position.

Earlier, President Moon Jae-in had expressed his intention to "participate in efforts for a peaceful resolution," drawing attention to whether South Korea would join international sanctions or provide military support.

The Blue House official said, "The fact that President Moon chaired the National Security Council (NSC) plenary meeting yesterday itself reflects the seriousness of the Ukraine situation," adding, "We are considering various possibilities, but military support or troop dispatch does not apply to us."

He continued, "What we are currently reviewing centers on diplomatic measures," and added, "Since the future development of the Ukraine situation is uncertain, the government is keeping all options open and preparing for various scenarios."

Regarding 'diplomatic measures,' the Blue House official explained, "Diplomatic measures mean exchanging opinions and consulting with key parties involved," emphasizing, "It is important to closely consult with the relevant parties."

On whether to join international sanctions, he said, "Our country is communicating closely with the United States and other related countries as a responsible member of the international community," adding, "However, we plan to consult with related countries while taking necessary measures to minimize any negative impact on our economy and ensure that our citizens can maintain stable economic activities under any circumstances."

At the NSC meeting the previous day, President Moon also instructed, "Please actively work to ensure that the Ukraine situation does not negatively affect the peace process on the Korean Peninsula."

Regarding this, a Blue House official explained the background of President Moon’s remarks: "Currently, the United States, European countries, and Russia are countries that have helped advance the Korean Peninsula peace process," adding, "Maintaining close cooperation among these countries is important for consultations within the main bodies of the Security Council."

He added, "We are closely monitoring the situation in North Korea," and said, "Although we do not know exactly how the situation will unfold, we are making efforts to resume dialogue as much as possible and to advance peace on the Korean Peninsula."
