Mac Shakes Off 'Disaster' Label... "Four New Mac Models with M2 Chip Expected to Launch" Apple iMac 2021 Model

[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Mark Gurman of Bloomberg predicted that Apple will unveil four new Mac series equipped with its self-developed system-on-chip (SoC), the M2 chip, within this year.

IT specialist magazine The Verge cited Gurman's 'Power On' newsletter on the 20th (local time), reporting, "This year, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, 24-inch iMac, and newly designed MacBook Air will be released."

The first Mac series is expected to be unveiled at the Apple event on March 8. New products will be released consecutively in May and June. In March, Apple is known to reveal new Mac products in addition to the iPhone SE and iPad Air.

Apple has not disclosed any clues about the M2 chip. However, Gurman expects the M2 chip to have significantly improved processor performance compared to the M1 chip, featuring an 8-core architecture. The graphics cores will also be enhanced from 7-8 cores to 9-10 cores. Based on the precedent set by the M1 chip, the Pro and Max versions of the M2 chip are expected to be released in 2023.

Mark Gurman also evaluated that the Mac business has entered a full-fledged upward trajectory. Gurman said, "Back in 2016, Macs had the fewest updates and the MacBook Pro was truly a 'disaster,' but now it is fair to say that Apple Silicon has changed everything."

The changed status of the Mac series is also confirmed by its performance. Apple recorded $28 billion (approximately 33 trillion KRW) in sales in the Mac segment in 2020. This is an increase of $7 billion from $21 billion in 2011. Last year, it recorded $35 billion (approximately 42 trillion KRW), achieving higher single business unit performance than the iPad segment.
