[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Starting this March, 17 kindergartens, 2 elementary schools, and 1 middle school will open in Seoul.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced that as of March 1, it will establish one standalone kindergarten (Songpa Wirye Kindergarten) and 16 attached kindergartens at schools such as Jeongok Elementary School within the Bukwirye Residential Development Area in Songpa-gu.

Cheongpa Elementary School Attached Kindergarten will be converted into a standalone kindergarten by constructing a new building on the available land of Cheongpa Elementary School located in Cheongpa-dong 2-ga, Yongsan-gu.

Three schools will open: two elementary schools and one middle school. Yangwon Forest Elementary School will be established in the Yangwon Public Housing Development Area in Jungnang-gu, and Wirye Sol Elementary School and Wirye Sol Middle School will be newly established in the Bukwirye Residential Development Area in Songpa-gu. Yangwon Forest Elementary School will operate 20 classes (approximately 429 students), Wirye Sol Elementary School 38 classes (approximately 959 students), and Wirye Sol Middle School 18 classes (approximately 425 students). Special classes will be newly established, one each at Yangwon Forest Elementary and Wirye Sol Elementary.

Deoksu High School, located in Haengdang-dong, Seongdong-gu, will relocate its general education department to the Bukwirye Residential Development Area in Songpa-gu, while the specialized education department will temporarily operate as Haengdang Branch School at its current location until the graduation of current students by 2023. Deoksu High School will have 12 classes with an expected student population of 253. Haengdang Branch School will have 10 classes with approximately 108 students.

Founded in 1910, Deoksu High School has operated as a comprehensive high school (simultaneously running general and specialized departments) since 2007. Due to increasing demands for separation, it was decided to build and relocate the general education department and integrate the specialized department with Gyeonggi Sang High School in the 2024 academic year.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "We will continue to expand public kindergartens, which are insufficient compared to enrollment demand, and proactively respond to urban development and population movement by promoting balanced placement of elementary and middle schools and developing various school models."
