[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] POSCO's experiential sculpture 'Space Walk,' installed at Hwanho Park in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, has emerged as a new landmark of Pohang.
According to POSCO on the 18th, the number of visitors to Space Walk, completed in November last year, has exceeded 210,000.
Space Walk is a curved sculpture resembling a roller coaster, measuring 60m in width, 57m in length, and 25m in height. Walking along the 333m-long steel structure track offers a panoramic view of Hwanho Park, Pohang Steelworks, Yeongildae Beach, and the surrounding scenery. The name Space Walk was chosen to convey the joy of seemingly floating through outer space.
POSCO signed an agreement with Pohang City to make Hwanho Park a nationally renowned attraction and completed this sculpture over two years from 2019, investing approximately 11.7 billion KRW, then donated it to the city. The 317 tons of steel used in the sculpture were all POSCO steel products, designed to withstand wind speeds exceeding legal standards and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale.
Since its completion, Space Walk has gained popularity through word of mouth among travelers and has become a local attraction. It was also selected as a popular travel destination by the Korea Tourism Organization. Recently, POSCO reported that daily visitors number about 3,000 on weekdays and about 6,000 on weekends and holidays.
A POSCO official stated, "Half of the visitors are from outside the area, and the economic impact from attracting tourists is expected to be significant."
