Kookmin Bio Co., Ltd. (CEO Seong Mun-hee) announced that, as a result of joint research with Kookmin University (President Lim Hong-jae), it launched the functional food with functional ingredients, ‘Yukwae/Sangkwae Soy Milk,’ at the end of January.

Functional foods with labeling refer to products using 29 types of functional ingredients designated by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in early 2021. Kookmin Bio Co., Ltd. also released ‘Yukwae Soy Milk,’ containing chlorella known to help skin health, and ‘Sangkwae Soy Milk,’ containing fructooligosaccharides known to aid smooth bowel movements, based on differentiated domestic soybean varieties (Iksan So-cheongja, Jeju Namulkong) through continuous joint research with the Department of Biofermentation Convergence at Kookmin University, aligned with domestic trends.

Kookmin Bio Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Kookmin University Technology Holdings Co., Ltd., is a company promoting microbiome regulation and biohealth new drug R&D based on differentiated technology that can select functional ingredients. Since its founding, Kookmin Bio Co., Ltd. has continuously formed a consortium with researchers from the Department of Biofermentation Convergence at Kookmin University to conduct joint research. In 2020, it discovered two initial raw materials (Iksan So-cheongja, Jeju Namulkong) and commercialized them into products familiar to consumers, such as ‘Kookmin Bio Yak-kong Soy Milk’ and ‘Kookmin Bio Jeju Namulkong Soy Milk.’

Kim Hyun-seok, Head of Strategic Planning at Kookmin Bio Co., Ltd., said, “Although various functional ingredients are distributed in domestic agricultural products, many consumers are still unaware of them, and the higher prices compared to cheap imported raw materials make it difficult to reach consumers. Through the functional food line slogan ‘Health from Nature, Gift of Health,’ Kookmin Bio plans to commercialize several excellent functional ingredients from domestic agricultural products into functional foods to showcase the importance and excellence of our agricultural products to consumers.”

Kim Hyung-jun, Head of Product Development at Kookmin Bio Co., Ltd., stated, “The upcoming super-aged society will increase demand for nutritional balance and enhanced antioxidant efficacy for the elderly, and the utilization of functional foods with labeling is expected to rise. Kookmin Bio will continue to introduce highly palatable functional products that elderly people or those needing health care can easily incorporate into their daily lives.”
