Seoul National University Regular Admission Additional Acceptances Double Last Year... Liberal Arts Students Cross-Applied but Chose Medical School

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The number of additional successful candidates in the regular admission round for the 2022 academic year at Seoul National University (SNU) has significantly increased compared to the previous year. This is due to top-tier applicants who applied across fields to the humanities division at SNU giving up their acceptance to pursue medical-related fields.

According to an analysis by Jongno Academy on the status of the first round of additional successful candidates in the 2022 regular admission general screening, the number of first-round additional successful candidates at SNU this year was 112, an increase of 55 from last year’s 57. The ratio of additional successful candidates relative to the recruitment quota rose from 7.1% to 10.8%.

Among the first-round additional successful candidates at SNU, 44 were from the humanities division, a rise of 40 from last year’s 4. The breakdown includes 10 from the College of Humanities (additional acceptance rate 12.7%), 8 from the Business School (13.8%), 2 from the Department of Political Science and International Relations (8.0%), 2 from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development (15.4%), and 12 from the Division of Liberal Studies in the integrated recruitment category (32.4%).

The sharp increase in additional successful candidates in the humanities division is attributed to many students who applied across fields to SNU humanities (Group B) and medical-related fields at other universities (Groups A and C), and who gave up their acceptance at SNU after being admitted to multiple programs.

The number of first-round additional successful candidates in the natural sciences division was 66, an increase of 13 from last year’s 53.

The majors with the highest number of first-round additional successful candidates at SNU are as follows: Division of Liberal Studies (recruitment quota 37) with 12 candidates, Humanities division (quota 79) with 10, Business School (quota 58) with 8, School of Dentistry (quota 16) with 7, Pharmacy (quota 21) with 6, and Department of Computer Science and Engineering (quota 30) with 6.

At Yonsei University, the number of first-round additional successful candidates was 405, an increase of 45 from last year. Korea University had 275, up by 80 from the previous year.

In the cases of Yonsei University and Korea University, additional successful candidates arose because students who had been admitted to both SNU or applied across fields, or who had multiple admissions including medical-related fields at other schools, did not enroll.

At Yonsei University, the department with the highest number of first-round additional successful candidates is Business Administration with 91 candidates (59.1% relative to recruitment quota), followed by the Department of Economics with 37 (33.9%). In the natural sciences division, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had 43 (48.9%), and the Department of Computer Science had 23 (74.2%). The College of Medicine had 9 (20.5%), and the College of Pharmacy had 9 (56.3%).

At Korea University, in the humanities division, the Business School had 34 additional successful candidates (32.4%), and the Department of Economics had 11 (18.0%). In the natural sciences division, the Department of Computer Science (Type A, natural sciences) had 22 (48.9%), and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had 21 (28.0%). The College of Medicine had 5 first-round additional successful candidates (18.5%).
