High-Efficiency Light Collection, Transmission, and Diffusion Technology Delivers High-Density Full-Spectrum Solar Light Indoors and Underground
20% Higher Light Intensity and Spectrum Transmission Compared to Existing Technologies... Designated as First Construction New Technology This Year
Applied to the World's First Underground Park in Manhattan, USA, the 'Lowline Project'
Hyundai Engineering announced on the 10th that it has developed a natural lighting system using solar power and applied this technology to an underground park in Manhattan, New York, USA.
This is an eco-friendly smart construction technology that installs a concentrator device on the ground to collect natural sunlight and delivers high-density solar light indoors and underground. Hyundai Engineering developed this technology in collaboration with Sunportal Co., Ltd., a company specializing in natural lighting systems and renewable energy, and completed its designation as the first construction new technology of the year (No. 925).
This technology can deliver 20% more light intensity and spectrum than existing solar transmission technologies and can move light up to 15 times farther. Additionally, by adjusting the aperture, it is effective in controlling indoor humidity and reducing condensation, making it highly applicable to eco-friendly factories or smart factories. It can also be applied to indoor solar power generation.
In fact, this technology was applied to the world’s first underground park, the Lowline Project, which transformed an abandoned 4,000㎡ underground streetcar terminal space in Manhattan, New York, into a habitat where over 3,500 species of various plants can thrive. Domestically, it has also been applied to places such as the ‘Garden of the Sun’ underground at Jonggak Station in Seoul.
In particular, Hyundai Engineering and Sunportal Co., Ltd. are evaluated to have secured economic feasibility and contributed to job creation in the related industry by successfully localizing a significant portion of the concentrator device components, which had previously been dependent on imports, through joint research.
Hyundai Engineering plans to propose applying this technology to the ‘Second Garden of the Sun’ project promoted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It also plans to review applying it to residential complexes supplied by Hyundai Engineering through the development of related residential products.
A Hyundai Engineering official said, "The development of this natural lighting system is the result of close cooperation with domestic small and medium-sized enterprises, and we have succeeded in developing smart construction new technology that is widely recognized not only in Korea but also overseas." He added, "We will continue to secure economic feasibility through the development and localization of technologies in various fields and contribute to the activation of smart construction technologies in Korea."
