Visual Effects (VFX)-based XR Immersive Content Technology Attracts Attention
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] As the COVID-19 pandemic has prolonged, making outdoor activities difficult, an indoor-centered lifestyle has become the norm, leading to an explosive increase in demand for video content.
According to industry sources on the 1st, in response to the growing demand for video, various special video technologies are being developed mainly by sports and entertainment companies to meet viewers' needs for differentiated content. We introduce the so-called ‘special video technologies that entertain viewers,’ which are gaining attention and recognition not only domestically but also from overseas audiences.
XR Immersive Content Realizing Blockbuster Movies and K-POP Idol Virtual Stages
Giantstep, which captivated movie fans with overwhelming visual effects (VFX) technology in blockbuster films such as ‘Haeundae’ and ‘Train to Busan,’ has recently provided rich viewing experiences to audiences by applying XR (eXtended Reality) technology in music videos of various K-Pop musicians.
Based on differentiated AR (Augmented Reality) technology, Giantstep operated real-time non-face-to-face XR live concerts on Naver NOW, creating virtual stages for participating artists and offering diverse viewer-customized video content.
Furthermore, to produce full-scale XR immersive content, Giantstep established ‘A.I-ONE STUDIO,’ consisting of a chroma key studio and an LED studio built with ultra-high-resolution displays, and plans to apply optimized technologies for XR immersive video content such as Tracking, Lighting, Real-time Engine, and Real-time Color Correction (DI). The real-time rendering system and tracking technology enable real-time tracking of actors' positions, allowing direction beyond time and space.
Real-time Interactive Time-Slice Multiview Video Streaming Service to Replay Sports Games from Any Angle
When enjoying sports games broadcasted from the perspective of the cameras or watching entertainment videos like dramas and movies edited from fixed angles, viewers often wonder, ‘Can I watch only the scenes I want from the angles I want?’
4DReplay, a startup specializing in 4D special video production, reflected these viewer needs early on and, since 2019, has introduced the world’s first real-time interactive time-slice multiview video streaming service ‘4DLive,’ allowing viewers to select the direction they want and enjoy live sports games from free viewpoints.
‘4DLive,’ a special video solution that lets viewers freely watch the movement of subjects on screen from desired angles and speeds in real time, is an interactive streaming service that supports up to 360-degree real-time screen rotation. 4DLive supplies video content to domestic LG Uplus and Japan’s mobile carrier Softbank’s 5G services, as well as to Bell Canada’s 5G service in Canada.
At the Beijing Winter Olympics, five events also featured 4DLive technology, allowing viewers to watch various games through the 360-degree special video production solution 4DReplay.
‘Virtual Human’ Solution VIT Enabling Real-time Communication within Videos
Recently, in the IT industry, ‘Virtual Humans’ that are more human-like than real people have emerged as a hot topic. In response, Vivestudios raised expectations by unveiling the virtual human ‘Jilju’ at the end of last year.
Vivestudios has developed an integrated solution called ‘VIT (Vivestudios Immersive Technology)’ that enables real-time presentation of immersive content such as AR, MR, and XR. Through VIT, virtual humans in videos can communicate with people in real time, and their appearance can be rendered more naturally.
Starting with the virtual human ‘Jilju,’ Vivestudios plans to develop more than 10 additional characters, aiming to reach a level where video content can be sufficiently produced with only one or two real actors. Additionally, virtual human technology will be utilized in various real-time video content such as live commerce and performances.
