Coast Guard Cheong Establishes Dedicated Unit to Launch Satellite Project... Building Transboundary Maritime Surveillance Network Korea Coast Guard

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Korea Coast Guard has established a dedicated organization for satellite projects and is set to actively pursue satellite initiatives.

The Coast Guard announced on the 28th that following last year's communication satellite project, this year it will participate in the development of (micro) small satellites and the Korea Positioning System (KPS).

To this end, it has created a dedicated team called the 'Satellite Project Promotion Division' to oversee the three major satellite projects, design satellites optimized for Coast Guard missions, and build a transboundary maritime surveillance network.

The transboundary maritime surveillance network will significantly enhance maritime security, safety, and law enforcement capabilities by securing satellite assets in addition to the existing reliance on vessels and aircraft for Coast Guard operations.

Satellites are expected to quickly detect situations occurring in distant seas, eliminate communication blind spots, and improve the accuracy of satellite distress signal locations.

The Coast Guard will also establish cooperative systems with ministries related to space technology development such as the Ministry of Science and ICT, research institutes, and companies, continuously reflecting maritime security and safety-related satellite projects in national space policy to transform the Coast Guard mission paradigm.

Jung Bong-hoon, Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard, stated, "Satellites are essential assets for Coast Guard missions," adding, "Through the dedicated organization, we will steadily promote related projects to ensure a safe and clean sea that the public can truly feel."
