Special Judicial Police Unit Nationwide Expansion
Expansion of Payment Suspension and Delay System for Suspected Voice Phishing Accounts
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, promised on the 27th to eradicate 'voice phishing crimes' through strict crackdowns.
Kim Jin-wook, spokesperson for the Democratic Party's election campaign committee, announced the 11th 'Sobok Sobok (Happiness of Ordinary Citizens, Small Happiness)' pledge containing this content during an afternoon briefing.
The Democratic Party's campaign committee stated, "Recently, smishing and voice phishing crimes using COVID-19 loss compensation funds or quarantine support funds as bait have added to the difficulties of small business owners and self-employed people, causing them distress twice," and added, "We will definitely eradicate voice phishing crimes to ensure that ordinary people do not shed tears."
They emphasized that voice phishing crimes are particularly malicious as they steal seed money from ordinary citizens, such as retirement funds, university tuition fees for youth, and startup funds for prospective entrepreneurs, and pledged to strengthen crackdowns going forward.
The campaign committee said, "We will expand the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police Unit model, which achieved results in cracking down on illegal private loans and speculative real estate, nationwide to conduct strong crackdowns." They also added, "In response to increasingly sophisticated and elaborate crime methods ranging from account transfer scams to loan fraud, we will dramatically enhance advanced technology and investigative capabilities," and "We will also strengthen the responsibilities of telecommunications companies and financial institutions by shortening response times for spam notification apps, suspending payments on suspected voice phishing accounts, and expanding payment delay systems."
