[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Nam Gyeong-eup (31), who conspired with Jo Joo-bin, the mastermind of the Telegram 'Baksa Bang', to lure victims and produce and distribute sexual exploitation materials, had his sentence slightly reduced in the second trial.
The Seoul High Court Criminal Division 12-3 (Presiding Judges Kim Hyeong-jin, Choi Bong-hee, Jin Hyun-min) on the 25th overturned the first trial's sentence of 17 years imprisonment for Nam, who was tried on charges including quasi-rape, and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment.
He was also ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device (electronic anklet) for 10 years, be restricted from employment at child and disabled-related facilities for 10 years, complete 120 hours of sexual violence treatment programs, and have his personal information disclosed for 10 years.
The court stated, "In the appeal trial, two of the victims expressed that they did not wish for the defendant to be punished," and added, "The sentence imposed by the original court was somewhat heavy and is deemed unfair."
Previously, Nam was prosecuted for luring five victims through social networking services (SNS) from February to March 2020, handing them over to Jo, forcing another accomplice to sexually assault one victim, and distributing the filmed sexual exploitation materials on Baksa Bang. Meanwhile, Jo was confirmed to have a 42-year prison sentence by the Supreme Court last October.
