Court: "Defendant Admits All Crimes and Shows Remorse... Family Also Pleads for Leniency"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A man in his 40s who abused his 12-year-old biological daughter and assaulted three police officers who responded to the scene was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
On the 24th, the Criminal Division 12 of the Incheon District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Sang-woo) announced that A (42), who was indicted on charges including obstruction of official duties causing injury under the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes, was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison with a 4-year suspension. Additionally, A was ordered to attend 40 hours of child abuse recidivism prevention lectures and was banned from employment at child-related institutions for 3 years.
The court stated, "The defendant physically abused the victim child, his daughter, by slapping her cheek and also assaulted the police officers who responded after receiving the report. Considering the nature of the crime and the resulting harm, the culpability is by no means light."
However, the court explained the sentencing reasoning, saying, "The defendant admitted to all the crimes and showed remorse, and the victim child did not want the defendant to be punished from the investigation stage. We also took into account the family's plea for leniency."
Earlier, A was indicted for abusing his daughter B (12) by grabbing her hair and throwing her to the floor and slapping her at their home in Jung-gu, Incheon, around 12:20 a.m. on February 4 last year.
A also swung his fists at the police officers who responded after his wife reported "my husband is assaulting me." He knocked down Officer C (54), causing rib fractures with a six-week recovery period, grabbed and shook the hair of one constable, and was also indicted for knocking down and injuring another constable.
