[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] Joo Youngsoo, head of the Public Health Medical Headquarters at the National Medical Center, has been appointed as the new director of the National Medical Center.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 24th that Joo was appointed as the director of the National Medical Center for a three-year term starting on the 23rd. According to relevant laws, the director of the National Medical Center is appointed by the Minister of Health and Welfare after approval by the medical center's board of directors.
Director Joo graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine and has served as a professor at Hallym University College of Medicine and Seongsim Hospital for over 20 years since 1999. Since 2020, he has worked at the National Medical Center as the head of the Planning and Coordination Office and the Public Health Medical Headquarters. In particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he supported the National Medical Center in playing a central role in the national public health crisis by classifying patients according to severity and establishing strategies to expand hospital beds in the metropolitan area.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare stated, “Based on Director Joo’s extensive experience in social medicine, occupational and environmental medicine education, and public medical policy support, the National Medical Center will enhance its status as the national central hospital. We expect him to carry out various tasks smoothly, including the new construction and relocation to Bangsan-dong and the establishment of the Central Infectious Disease Hospital.”
