[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] As the COVID-19 Omicron variant rapidly spreads, positive COVID-19 cases have continued nationwide.
According to health authorities and local governments including Seoul City, from midnight to 9 p.m. on this day, a total of 5,675 confirmed positive cases were reported across 17 cities and provinces nationwide.
This number is 995 fewer than the 6,670 cases recorded at the same time the previous day. However, compared to 3,344 cases recorded at the same time one week ago on the 16th, it is 2,331 more, and compared to 2,805 cases two weeks ago on the 9th, it is 2,870 more.
The number of new confirmed cases, which had been declining since late last month, has recently been increasing due to the spread of the Omicron variant. Since there is still time until midnight when the count is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases to be announced on the 24th is expected to be around 7,000.
On this day, 3,145 new cases (55.4%) were reported in the metropolitan area, and 2,530 new cases (44.6%) in non-metropolitan areas.
All 17 cities and provinces reported cases, with Gyeonggi at 1,315, Seoul 1,265, Incheon 565, Daegu 491, Busan 296, Gwangju 285, Chungnam 235, Gyeongbuk 234, Jeonnam 206, Jeonbuk 164, Daejeon 161, Gyeongnam 160, Chungbuk 112, Gangwon 94, Ulsan 60, Jeju 20, and Sejong 12 cases.
From the 17th to the 23rd, the number of new confirmed cases at midnight each day were: 3,857 on the 17th, 4,070 on the 18th, 5,804 on the 19th, 6,601 on the 20th, 6,767 on the 21st, 7,008 on the 22nd, and 7,630 on the 23rd, averaging 5,962 cases per day.
