Songpa-gu Completes Nation's First Illuminance Data Construction... Safety and Crime Prevention Illumination Visualization Across the Entire Songpa-gu District

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) announced that, as a result of being the first in the nation to promote the ‘Illuminance Data Construction’ project, it has opened the ‘Nighttime Illuminance Data of Songpa-gu, Seoul’ on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Public Data Portal starting from the 11th of this month.

In April last year, Songpa-gu’s ‘Illuminance Data Construction’ project was selected in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s ‘2021 Public Data Enterprise Matching Support Project’ contest, securing approximately 180 million KRW in national funding and completing data construction in December.

This project involves measuring nighttime illuminance on major roads and alleys throughout Songpa-gu and building the data. While there have been cases where the government and local governments measured and analyzed illuminance data in some areas, Songpa-gu is the first to measure and build data covering the entire area.

Over the past seven months, the district measured nighttime illuminance on about 600 km of major roads and alleys within the area, including locations of lighting facilities (streetlights and security lights) and CCTV installations. This data was recorded along with latitude and longitude information and visualized as a map showing illuminance throughout Songpa-gu.

The accumulated data has recently been opened as public data so that anyone can utilize it in daily life. Detailed information can be found on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Public Data Portal.

With the opening and sharing of illuminance data across Songpa-gu, it is expected to be used not only to improve residents’ convenience but also to monitor safety and prevent crime.

The district plans to use this as an objective indicator for illuminance-related policy decisions and actively utilize it in various research for building a smart city by collaborating with universities and related institutions to ensure residents’ safety.

Mayor Park Seong-su of Songpa-gu said, “We will continuously provide public data that residents can use effectively in their daily lives to improve quality of life,” adding, “We will continue to actively utilize innovative growth engines such as big data and artificial intelligence, which are core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, to create a smart city Songpa.”

Last year, Songpa-gu expanded and reorganized the existing Information and Communication Division into the Smart City Division, establishing an institutional foundation such as drafting a master plan and enacting ordinances to present the future vision of Smart City Songpa.

In addition, Songpa-gu is accelerating the realization of a smart city by developing the nation’s first smart civil complaint search system and comprehensive CCTV management system.
