The 'Hyundai Industrial Development Expulsion and Hakdong·Hwajeong-dong Disaster Citizens' Countermeasure Committee,' composed of over 40 civic groups including the Gwangju Citizens' Group Council, announced its launch statement on the 20th.


The committee stated, "We will no longer tolerate a barbaric society where citizens and workers are driven to danger and death for profit," and added, "We will fight against Hyundai Industrial Development in solidarity with the victims' families' council."


It continued, "Hyundai Industrial Development must be permanently expelled from the construction industry," emphasizing, "Institutional reforms must be made to prevent disasters like those in Hakdong and Hwajeong-dong from recurring."


It also said, "Circumstantial evidence confirming Hyundai Industrial Development's responsibility for this disaster is emerging one after another," and declared, "We will take legal action against Hyundai Industrial Development, which ignored safety and forced the construction, as well as related agencies that neglected their supervisory duties."


Furthermore, it added, "Gwangju City must prepare countermeasures not only for the families of the missing but also for citizens facing disaster situations due to the collapse accident," and urged, "Reflect the voices of citizens to block corruption in redevelopment projects and present disaster response manuals."
