[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Yeongsan River and Seomjin River Basin Water Management Committee will hold a public hearing for three days from the 24th to the 26th to establish the "1st Yeongsan River, Seomjin River, and Jeju Basin Water Management Comprehensive Plan (2021?2030)."
The comprehensive plan is the highest-level basin water management plan established for the first time since the implementation of the "Water Management Basic Act" and the unification of water management tasks under the Ministry of Environment. It presents the vision and direction for water management in the Yeongsan River, Seomjin River, and Jeju basins until 2030 and serves as a standard for water-related plans established by local governments in the future.
The draft comprehensive plan has been jointly researched since December 2020 by a consortium of water-related professional organizations (Korean Society of Agricultural Engineers, Korean Water Resources Association, Korea Rural Community Corporation, Korea Water Resources Corporation, and Isan Co., Ltd.), and 48 discussions have been held to gather diverse opinions from residents, local governments, and related organizations.
The purpose of this public hearing is to inform the public about the draft comprehensive plan developed so far and to reflect the public's opinions in the plan establishment.
The detailed schedule of the public hearing will be divided into three sessions considering the COVID-19 situation: Jeju area (24th), Seomjin River basin (25th), and Yeongsan River basin (26th).
The public hearing will proceed with a presentation of the main contents of the draft comprehensive plan by Professor Yoon Kwang-sik of the Korean Society of Agricultural Engineers, the lead research institution, followed by discussions on basin water management directions with one chairperson and four panelists for each basin.
At the same time, the Basin Water Management Committee, which establishes and reviews the comprehensive plan, and the research institutions will also participate to respond to on-site opinions and questions.
Chairman Jeong Jae-seong of the Basin Water Management Committee said, "We will do our best to establish a comprehensive plan that can present the vision and direction of water management for the Yeongsan River, Seomjin River, and Jeju basins by properly reflecting the opinions proposed through this public hearing."
