[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Roberta Metsola, a Maltese native, has been elected as the new President of the European Parliament.

According to major foreign media on the 18th (local time), Metsola, the newly elected president, received 458 votes out of 616 in the vote held that day.

Metsola becomes the third woman and the youngest president ever elected to the European Parliament.

She will serve as president for two and a half years, succeeding David Sassoli, the former European Parliament president who recently passed away due to illness.

Prior to his death, former President Sassoli announced that he would not run in this election for the new president, and Metsola, as the vice president of the European Parliament, has acted as the acting president since Sassoli's passing on the 11th.
