[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Boryung Pharmaceutical's sign language audiobook, 'BR (Boryung) Reader Audiobook,' designed for both people with and without disabilities to enjoy, will be available through the National Library for Persons with Disabilities website.
On the 18th, Boryung Pharmaceutical announced that it has partnered with the National Library for Persons with Disabilities to provide the BR Reader Audiobook as a video on the library's site. This partnership was established to bridge the information gap for people with disabilities and to expand access to a variety of high-quality content.
The BR Reader Audiobook reads works aloud in both audio and sign language, making it accessible to everyone regardless of disability. It is a video book first introduced by Boryung Pharmaceutical in September of last year. Boryung Pharmaceutical, in collaboration with the Korea Essay Literature Promotion Association, has been producing video books of the grand prize-winning works from the Boryung Doctor Essay Literature Award, which they established and operate, releasing two videos monthly on Boryung Pharmaceutical's YouTube channel. These essays, written by doctors based on their experiences in medical settings, are enhanced by emotional narration and have received positive reviews.
Particularly notable is the consideration for people with disabilities. Unlike existing voice reading aids for the visually impaired, which often feature cold mechanical voices and awkward narration that limit everyday use, the BR Reader Audiobook features narration directly contributed by Boryung Pharmaceutical employees as a talent donation. Additionally, recognizing that sign language is a 'second mother tongue' for the hearing impaired and that they are more familiar with sign language than subtitles, sign language was also incorporated into the audiobook through employees' talent donations, further enhancing the emotional impact of the works.
Boryung Pharmaceutical and the National Library for Persons with Disabilities plan to continue their cooperation to improve information accessibility and maximize resource utilization for people with disabilities following this partnership.
Won Jong-pil, director of the National Library for Persons with Disabilities, expressed gratitude, saying, "In a situation where there are not many materials for people with disabilities, we appreciate the production and sharing of sign language audiobooks of warm and emotional essay works." He added, "We will continue to work together to close the information gap for people with disabilities."
Jang Doo-hyun, CEO of Boryung Pharmaceutical, said, "We are pleased to share the moving stories of doctors with more people through the National Library for Persons with Disabilities." He also stated, "We will continue to develop various contents that make our society warmer and grow into a company that cares not only for treatment but also for the heart."
