[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Korea Road Traffic Authority announced on the 18th that it has launched full-scale operations of the "Weather Information-Based Traffic Accident Analysis Convergence System," which integrates weather information into traffic accident analysis.

This project has been jointly promoted by the Korea Road Traffic Authority and the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration since March last year, and the system was completed last month. The two organizations applied the system to analyze traffic accidents in the Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam regions as a pilot project and have jointly prepared to expand the system nationwide.

The Weather Information-Based Traffic Accident Analysis Convergence System is an advanced version of the traffic accident analysis conducted by the Korea Road Traffic Authority by incorporating weather information. It collects various hazardous weather conditions that can affect road traffic, enabling more accurate accident cause analysis and proactive prevention activities.

The system features precise weather data collection at traffic accident sites and various functions such as an AI-based detailed fog map. Additionally, it can be linked with existing systems to utilize accumulated traffic accident analysis data, including monthly fog occurrence status. Weather data is sourced from ground meteorological observation equipment nationwide, the Korea Meteorological Administration's ultra-short-term real-time data, and fog data provided by the Chollian Satellite 2A.

Lee Joo-min, Chairman of the Korea Road Traffic Authority, stated, "Weather information is a crucial factor in traffic accident analysis and prevention. With the establishment of this system, more precise and accurate traffic accident analysis is now possible, which will greatly contribute to creating a safer road traffic environment."
