[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City recently became the first among central and local governments to join the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) as a full member.
According to the city on the 17th, Daejeon expressed its intention to join the association in November last year and proceeded with the membership application. The membership status will be maintained for three years.
The association, established in 1960, is a non-profit organization with participation from 78 countries including the United States, Canada, and Australia.
The association, together with the World Health Organization, designates September 10th each year as World Suicide Prevention Day. Its activities aim to prevent suicide and suicidal behaviors, conduct research and analysis on social impacts, and strengthen international cooperation through joint prevention efforts.
Lee Dong-han, Director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Daejeon City, said, “By joining the association, we have laid the groundwork to share suicide prevention policies and trends among countries and to establish a mutual cooperation system for suicide prevention. We will strive to make Daejeon a leading city that respects the value of life.”
