'1 Ton per Day' Hydrogen is Born... Korea's First Changwon Hydrogen Production Base Begins Full Operation in the New Year

'1 Ton per Day' Hydrogen is Born... Korea's First Changwon Hydrogen Production Base Begins Full Operation in the New Year A ceremony was held to commemorate the first shipment of hydrogen gas produced in-house at the hydrogen production base in Seongju-dong, Changwon City.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Changwon is emerging as a 'hydrogen self-sufficient' city. The nation's first hydrogen production base will begin operation in the new year.

On the 30th, Changwon City, Gyeongnam, held a shipment ceremony for hydrogen gas produced independently at the nation's first hydrogen production base established in the Seongju-dong Hydrogen Energy Circulation System Demonstration Complex.

The event was attended by Mayor Heo Seong-mu, Baek Jeong-han, Director of Changwon Industrial Promotion Agency, and Kim Bang-hee, CEO of JNK Heater.

The attendees applauded the operation of the tube trailer vehicle supplying hydrogen, first shipped from the hydrogen production base, to the Pallyong charging station.

The city has promoted the establishment of the hydrogen production base to break away from dependence on by-product hydrogen supplied from petrochemical complexes in Ulsan, Daesan, Yeosu, etc., and to maintain stable hydrogen production and supply.

Since attracting the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's 'Hydrogen Production Base Construction Project' in May 2019, the project has been promoted with support from the government and Gyeongsangnam-do. In April, the nation's first hydrogen production base capable of producing and shipping 1 ton of hydrogen per day was completed.

The core facility of the hydrogen production base, the hydrogen refining equipment, is a domestically developed and produced facility by the Korean company JNK Heater. After six months of trial operation and equipment stabilization following completion, the safety of the hydrogen production and shipment process was verified.

From the new year 2022, 1 ton of hydrogen, enough to charge 250 hydrogen passenger cars or 40 hydrogen buses daily, will be produced and supplied to hydrogen charging stations within the jurisdiction.

Mayor Heo Seong-mu expressed his joy, saying, "This is a meaningful day demonstrating the capabilities of Changwon, the nation's top hydrogen industry special city, reborn from a city without hydrogen to one that is hydrogen self-sufficient."

He added, "It is significant that we can now produce 1 ton of hydrogen independently, which corresponds to 77% of Changwon's hydrogen demand of 1.3 tons per day, establishing a stable supply system."

He continued, "By 2024, when various hydrogen production projects underway in the jurisdiction are completed, 16 tons of hydrogen will be produced and supplied daily," adding, "Based on a plentiful hydrogen supply system, we will revitalize the hydrogen industry and transform into a true hydrogen city."
