[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Gayang-dong area in Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) has enhanced its charm with a variety of lights and facilities.
The district announced that it has developed the area around Yangcheon-ro 47-gil in Gayang-dong into the ‘Gangseo Historical and Cultural Street,’ where tradition and the future coexist.
This project revitalized the deteriorated landscape around historical and cultural heritage sites such as Yangcheon Hyanggyo and Yangcheon Goseongji located in Gayang-dong, transforming it into a historical and cultural street where people want to walk.
In particular, since the project began as a resident proposal to widely promote local cultural heritage, the opinions of residents were incorporated throughout the street via five rounds of community briefings.
First, a symbolic sculpture marking the ‘Gangseo Historical and Cultural Street’ installed at the entrance of Yangcheon-ro 47-gil, continuing from the Magok district, catches the eyes of passersby.
Following the symbolic sculpture into the street, visitors can see sculptures guiding them through the Gangseo Historical and Cultural Street and others introducing major historical and cultural heritage sites lined up behind it.
Benches installed along the street allow for brief rests while enjoying the street scenery, and photo zones set up at various spots let visitors take pictures with the newly renovated street as a backdrop.
Neatly designed screens, well-arranged pavement blocks, and roads guide the footsteps of passersby. Moreover, lighting has been added to the sculptures, and various patterned gobos symbolizing the Gangseo Historical and Cultural Street have been installed throughout the street, providing beautiful and diverse sights even at night.
Additionally, lighting was installed on the previously dark retaining wall of Gungsan and the stone wall path of the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum to ensure local residents can walk safely at night.
The district expects that the newly developed Gangseo Historical and Cultural Street will establish itself not just as a simple street but as a historical and cultural landmark with various themes.
Mayor Noh Hyun-song said, “The Gangseo Historical and Cultural Street is a meaningful place created by incorporating the opinions of local residents,” adding, “We will do our best to develop it into a representative cultural tourist destination of Gangseo-gu by linking it with nearby cultural and historical facilities such as Magok Seoul Botanic Park, Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum, and Gungsan Cultural Heritage Site.”

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) held the ‘2021 Seoul Future Education Agreement Ceremony’ on the afternoon of the 29th in the mayor’s office to present the future vision of educational cooperation projects, including the Seoul-type Innovative Education District, and to expand public consensus with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Jo Hee-yeon).
Mayor Noh Hyun-song said, “We have joined hands with the Office of Education based on a consensus that a healthy educational ecosystem must be created and a better educational environment established,” adding, “We will continue to listen to the voices from the education field and do our best to create a high-quality and sustainable educational environment.”
