Secured 218.7 Billion Won in Public Funding, Setting a New Record and Exceeding Targets

Gwangyang City Achieves Record Success in Contests and Awards This Year


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 27th that it has achieved the largest-ever result by securing 151 projects worth 220 billion KRW in various contests and awards this year.


In response to the increasing trend of diversified contest and award types by the government and higher institutions to overcome the economic crisis caused by COVID-19, the city strategically focused all efforts to reduce financial burdens and promote regional development, resulting in these achievements.


The city secured 73 billion KRW in 2018, 106.8 billion KRW in 2019, 146.5 billion KRW in 2020, 220 billion KRW in 2021, and this year exceeded the previous year by 73.5 billion KRW (50.1%).


Sixty percent of the projects selected this year were secured through external funding, with 11 projects worth 175.7 billion KRW (80.4%) exceeding 5 billion KRW each, and 13 projects worth 31 billion KRW (14.2%) exceeding 1 billion KRW each, producing results that will lead the city's development.


The major selected contest projects include ▲Construction of a public materials specialized science museum (40 billion KRW) ▲Disaster risk zone maintenance project (30 billion KRW) ▲Establishment of an eco-friendly lithium secondary battery recycling Test-Bed project (23.3 billion KRW) ▲Urban wind path creation project (20 billion KRW) ▲Geumho-dong urban regeneration project (15 billion KRW) ▲Local government intelligent transportation system (ITS) project (11.9 billion KRW) ▲Smart sewage management system establishment leading project (10.5 billion KRW).


The city also achieved awards in 37 categories (16 grand prizes and top awards, 18 excellence awards, 3 encouragement awards) in various evaluations.


In particular, it received high evaluations in several fields such as childcare policy, senior citizen policy, investment attraction and job creation evaluations.


With benefits enjoyed only by Gwangyang citizens such as newborn care expenses, operation of the Children's Care Foundation and Comprehensive Childcare Support Center, and a seamless care system, it was highly evaluated as the nation's leading childcare policy, winning the top award consecutively following last year's grand prize.


By operating the POSCO Group Employment Academy and attracting excellent companies such as POSCO secondary batteries and Oracle data centers, creating large-scale jobs and jobs for youth, middle-aged, women, disabled, elderly, and vulnerable groups, the city won the top award in the national local government job evaluation, achieving the honor of winning for seven consecutive years following last year's grand prize.


New award-winning projects include ▲Community integrated health promotion project ▲Dementia safety center best practice ▲General waterworks operator management status inspection ▲School forest best practice ▲Local regulation reform ▲Population policy ▲Implementation of community social security plan ▲Eco-friendly erosion control facility project.


Gwangyang Mayor Jeong Hyun-bok said, “As competition among local governments intensifies, the remarkable achievements of Gwangyang City were thanks to the interest and cooperation of its citizens.”


He added, “We will continue to actively discover projects that drive the local economy for the happiness of citizens and a better future for Gwangyang City.”
