Daejeon City to Provide 'Basic Childcare Allowance' Until 36 Months of Age

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City announced on the 24th that it will provide the ‘Daejeon-type Basic Childcare Allowance’ starting January next year.

According to the city, the Basic Childcare Allowance will be provided at 300,000 KRW per month from January next year for children aged 0 to 2 years old (up to 36 months after birth).

The allowance can be received if the newborn’s registered address is in Daejeon and either the father or mother has been registered as a resident in Daejeon for more than six months as of the birth date.

The eligible parent (father or mother) can apply for the Daejeon-type Basic Childcare Allowance within 60 days from the birth date and receive the allowance retroactively from the month of birth; if applied after 60 days, the allowance will be provided from the month of application.

Also, as of January next year, even if the father or mother has been registered in Daejeon for less than six months, application is possible once the six-month period is exceeded.

The city will also provide the Daejeon-type Basic Childcare Allowance to infants born from February 2019 to December of this year. The support period will be from January next year until the remaining period within 36 months after birth.

In this case as well, either the father or mother must have been registered as a resident in Daejeon for more than six months as of the application date; if less than six months, application can be made after the period has passed.

Infants born between February 2019 and December this year can apply for the Daejeon-type Basic Childcare Allowance at their local administrative welfare center from the 27th of this month until January 14th next year.

Applications must be submitted by either the father or mother with an ID card and a copy of a bankbook in their name, along with a completed application form and consent form for the collection and use of personal information.

The Daejeon-type Basic Childcare Allowance is scheduled to be paid on the 25th of each month. If applied before the 15th of the month, support will be provided in the same month; if applied after the 15th, support will start from the following month.

Meanwhile, the childbirth encouragement subsidy and childcare support fund operated until last year will be integrated into the Daejeon-type Childcare Support Allowance. However, for those born before January next year who did not apply for the childbirth encouragement subsidy, support can be received if applied within one year after birth, and the childcare support fund will be paid in January next year only for the December payment of this year.

Heo Tae-jung, mayor of Daejeon, said, “Daejeon has the second highest population decline rate after Seoul and the highest among the six major metropolitan cities, making population increase measures urgently needed. We expect that the Daejeon-type Basic Childcare Allowance will help reduce parents’ childcare costs and contribute to making Daejeon a child-friendly city.”
