Selected for Urban Regeneration Project in Sangju, Gyeongbuk, Adding Vitality to Wangsang District

250 Billion Scale, Implemented Over 5 Years Until 2026

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Trainee Reporter Lee Seryeong] The ‘Wangsan District Urban Regeneration New Deal Project’ in Sangju-si, Gyeongbuk, has been finally selected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s 2021 3rd Urban Regeneration New Project Competition for Central Business District Type.

This is the third achievement following the General Neighborhood Type project selected in 2017 and the Residential Support Type project selected in 2019.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held the 29th Urban Regeneration Special Committee and selected 32 local governments including Sangju-si, Gangseo in Seoul, and Anyang in Gyeonggi as the 3rd new urban regeneration New Deal projects this year.

The Central Business District Type project targets areas where public services in the old downtown have declined and commercial districts are deteriorating, supporting the restoration of public functions and revitalization of commercial districts in connection with history, culture, and tourism.

With a total budget of 25 billion KRW, including 15 billion KRW from the national government, 2.5 billion KRW from the provincial government, and 7.5 billion KRW from the city government, the project will be implemented around Wangsan Historical Park in Sangju-si.

It will be carried out over five years from next year until 2026, creating spaces accessible to youth, children, and the elderly such as the Youth Tomorrow Plus Center, Anytime Daon Center, Senior Dream Center, and Shared Space for All.

The city stated that the residents’ council devoted great effort from the planning stage to restore the central commercial district as a traditional central area, and that this result was achieved through public-private cooperation.

Mayor Kang Young-seok said, “We will do our best to ensure the successful promotion of the project achieved through the cooperation and efforts of many residents.”
