'2021 Digital Twin Connect Day' Held

Ministry of Science and ICT Hosts Government-wide Event on 'Digital Twin'

[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will hold the ‘Digital Twin Connect Day’ event online from 1 p.m. on the 17th to share the achievements of the digital twin sector, a core part of the Digital New Deal, and its future directions.

Relevant ministries including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Korea Forest Service participated in this Connect Day. It was the first pan-government event on digital twins since the announcement of the digital twin activation strategy in September.

The event was divided into two sessions: the 2021 project achievements presentation and the 2022 project briefing session.

In the first session, the 2021 performance report was presented, including the manufacturing industry innovation project that applied digital twins to materials, parts, and equipment companies to improve defect rates and reduce production costs, thereby enhancing productivity, as well as the digital twin-based technology development project to respond to fires and disasters in underground utility tunnels.

The second session began with an explanation of the progress and future directions of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘Digital Twin Land,’ which is the main ministry responsible for building 3D spatial information, followed by presentations on the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ digital twin smart port logistics platform construction project and the Ministry of Environment’s dam and river digital twin water management platform construction project.

The Ministry of Environment’s dam and river water management platform construction project is based on a leading pilot demonstration project conducted this year by the Ministry of Science and ICT in the Seomjin River basin, and aims to expand it to the five major river basins nationwide.

Cho Kyung-sik, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “Digital twins will expand not only to the transition to a carbon-neutral society but also to areas closely related to citizens’ lives such as safety and healthcare. As a representative task of the Digital New Deal and a core field of the hyper-connected new industry, we will closely cooperate with relevant ministries such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to ensure that the public can feel the achievements of digital twins.”
