[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan met on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Foreign and Development Ministers' Meeting held in the United Kingdom.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Minister Chung Eui-yong and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa naturally encountered each other at a reception on the 11th (local time), exchanged greetings in a friendly atmosphere, and had a conversation.

Minister Chung clearly conveyed the South Korean government's position on past issues such as forced labor and the Japanese military comfort women victims, emphasizing that since there are many areas for cooperation, these should be resolved through dialogue. In response, Minister Hayashi mentioned Japan's position on the issues.

Both ministers confirmed the importance of South Korea-Japan and South Korea-Japan-U.S. cooperation regarding the establishment of lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, and agreed to closely consult and communicate between their foreign ministries to further develop bilateral relations in the future.
