[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The prosecution has requested a prison sentence for broadcaster Park Shin-young (32), who is accused of causing a fatal traffic accident with a motorcycle while driving.
On the 9th, at the first trial of Park's case for causing death under the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling, held before Judge Jeong In-jae of the Criminal Division 5 at the Seoul Western District Court, the prosecution asked the court to sentence her to one year in prison. The prosecution stated, "Although the victim's side was also at fault in the accident, the defendant's speeding and signal violation were serious," and added, "We also considered that the defendant reached an amicable settlement with the victim's family."
Park's defense attorney said, "The defendant admits all charges. The bereaved family has expressed no desire for punishment," and requested leniency, citing that "the defendant has no prior criminal record, has been consistently involved in social contribution activities and donations, and is sincerely petitioned for by acquaintances."
Park tearfully said, "I am truly sorry to the bereaved family who lost their loved one because of me. Since that day (the day of the accident), I have been struggling with guilt and receiving psychiatric treatment. I deeply regret it and will continue to reflect throughout my life."
Park was indicted on charges of causing the death of a delivery worker in his 50s after colliding with a motorcycle that entered the intersection on a red light while she was going straight through a yellow light at the intersection in front of Sangam Elementary School in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, at around 10:28 a.m. on May 10. Neither driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Park's sentencing trial will be held on the afternoon of the 23rd.
