[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] A victim who lost family members in a murder case committed by Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, in 2006 has filed a lawsuit seeking damages against the candidate. The claim is based on the candidate's remarks referring to the murder case as 'dating violence,' which caused mental distress.

According to the legal community on the 9th, Mr. A, whose spouse and daughter were murdered and who himself suffered serious injuries at the hands of Lee's nephew, submitted a complaint to the Seoul Central District Court seeking damages worth 100 million won against the candidate.

It is known that Mr. A stated he suffered mental anguish because Lee recently referred to his nephew's murder case as 'dating violence' on social networking services (SNS).

Previously, Lee's nephew visited the home of his girlfriend in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, in May 2006, and stabbed his ex-girlfriend and her mother multiple times with a weapon, killing them. The Supreme Court confirmed a life sentence for him.

Lee served as the defense attorney for his nephew during the first and second trials and reportedly argued for a reduced sentence by claiming his nephew was in a state of diminished mental capacity. During this process, Mr. A sustained serious injuries after jumping from the veranda of a fifth-floor apartment to escape Lee's nephew.

Regarding this, Lee stated on the 24th of last month, "One of my relatives committed a serious crime of dating violence in the past, but since the family could not afford to hire a lawyer, I, being the only lawyer in the family, had no choice but to take on the defense."
