[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in will attend the 'Summit for Democracy' hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden on the 9th.
The Blue House announced on the 8th that President Moon is scheduled to participate in the Summit for Democracy via video conference on the afternoon of the 9th.
The Summit for Democracy is a meeting aimed at strengthening democracy and responding to authoritarian regimes, corruption, and human rights violations. Over 110 countries will attend via video conference to discuss agendas such as ▲blocking authoritarianism ▲eradicating corruption ▲promoting human rights.
This summit, which is also a pledge of President Joe Biden, is largely seen as a measure to check China and Russia, raising concerns that participating countries may be forced to choose between the U.S. and China.
In particular, as the U.S. has announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics citing China's human rights issues, there are expectations that the summit may call for participation in the boycott.
Meanwhile, this will be President Moon's third time attending a meeting hosted by President Biden, following the Climate Summit in April and the Supply Chain Summit in October.
