Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority Conducts On-site Inspection of Eco-friendly Port Cargo Handling Facilities

Inspection of Eco-Friendly Cargo Handling Facilities at Yeosu and Gwangyang Ports During the Government-Wide Carbon Neutrality Week

Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority Conducts On-site Inspection of Eco-friendly Port Cargo Handling Facilities

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Cha Minsik) announced on the 8th that it conducted an on-site inspection of eco-friendly port cargo handling facilities, a briefing on the circular hydrogen sharing network, and a ceremony for delivering eco safety vests in celebration of Public Institution Carbon Neutrality Week.

At the Gwangyang Port West Container Terminal (hereinafter GWCT) site, the authority demonstrated the operation of yard tractors equipped with DPF devices, attended by President Cha Minsik and other executives of the authority, as well as GWCT CEO Kim Kyungtae and related personnel.

Since last year, the authority has been working to reduce fine dust emissions at the port by attaching DPF devices to 85 yard tractors operating at Gwangyang Port.

To lead the improvement of port air quality and enhance competitiveness by reducing fuel costs of cargo handling equipment, the authority plans to promote an electrification project for 23 cargo handling equipment (transfer cranes) within Gwangyang Port, with a project cost of approximately 6.6 billion KRW, to be completed by 2022.

This involves converting the power source of diesel cargo handling equipment to an electric drive system with zero exhaust emissions. After completion, it is expected to reduce about 43,000 tons of carbon dioxide over 10 years of operation.

Additionally, the event included a briefing on the Yeosu-Gwangyang Port circular hydrogen sharing network.

The authority plans to establish a circular hydrogen sharing network spanning 50 km around the ‘Con’ Pier - Yulchon Industrial Complex - Yeosu Industrial Complex - Myodo - Gwangyang Steelworks, covering a beneficiary area of 87.66 million square meters. Through this, an economic and stable hydrogen supply and demand network among companies within the port will be formed.

In particular, at this event, President Cha delivered 30 recycled safety vests produced by the authority to GWCT to support the safety of port workers and to share the value of the resource circulation project promoted by the authority.

President Cha Minsik of the authority stated, “In line with the government’s carbon neutrality efforts, we will continuously pursue various initiatives to transform Yeosu-Gwangyang Port into an eco-friendly carbon-neutral port.”
