[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Devin Nunes, a Republican member of the House of Representatives who was a fervent supporter of former President Donald Trump, is leaving Congress to join the social media (SNS) company operated by former President Trump.

According to local foreign media on the 6th (local time), the "Trump Media and Technology Group" (TMTG) announced in a statement that Nunes will serve as the company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) starting January next year.

Former President Trump explained the reason for recruiting him, saying, "Representative Nunes understands that media and big tech companies must be stopped from undermining the freedoms that make America great."

Representative Nunes also stated, "The time has come to reopen the internet and allow the free flow of ideas and expression without censorship," adding, "America is the country that realized the dream of the internet, and TMTG will be the company that revives this dream."

Nunes served as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee for four years starting in 2015, and after the Democrats became the majority party in the House, he served as the ranking Republican on the committee, defending President Trump during congressional investigations into the 'Russia scandal' and the presidential impeachment.

He caused a strong stir by releasing the 'Nunes Memo,' which criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for biased investigations related to the Russia scandal. Like former President Trump, he has also taken a stance opposing mainstream media companies.

Former President Trump announced the establishment of TMTG last October and revealed plans to launch its own SNS application called 'Truth Social.'

Twitter permanently suspended former President Trump's account in January following the Capitol riot incident, and Facebook decided in June to temporarily suspend his account until January 2023, which is seen as a response to these actions.
