Gwangyang City Selected as an 'Excellent City' for Activating Lifelong Education in Jeollanam-do in 2021

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Gwangyang City announced on the 7th that it was selected as an ‘Excellent City’ among 22 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do in the 2021 Lifelong Education Activation Evaluation hosted by Jeollanam-do, securing an institutional commendation and a prize money of 10 million won.

Jeollanam-do conducted an evaluation this year for the first time on 22 cities and counties in the province and lifelong learning clubs active in those cities and counties to spread the atmosphere of lifelong education activation and guarantee lifelong learning rights for residents.

The evaluation was conducted through document screening of lifelong education operations and an untact video contest of clubs, comprehensively assessing the performance of city and county administrative projects.

Lifelong education operations were evaluated based on lifelong education budget, execution rate, organizational management capability, etc., and club videos were judged on artistry, originality, and harmony to select the winners.

The city promoted various programs to activate lifelong learning, including adult literacy education, support for excellent clubs, visiting delivery lectures, operation of a sharing platform, and support for lifelong learning facilities for the disabled. Following its designation as a lifelong learning city in 2006, it was re-designated as a lifelong learning city last May.

In particular, in this evaluation, efforts to increase the lifelong education budget and the budget execution rate received excellent evaluations.

In the lifelong learning club category, due to COVID-19, an ontact club contest was held featuring club introductions, practice processes, and performances, achieving the great success of ‘Dudle Sori’ and ‘Donghaeng’ being selected as excellent clubs.

‘Dudle Sori’ is a Samulnori volunteer club actively conducting performance volunteer activities by visiting senior centers, and ‘Donghaeng’ is a dementia prevention learning club diligently engaged in talent donation activities.

The selected excellent clubs will receive incentives such as the Governor’s Commendation, congratulatory performances at the 2022 Jeonnam Lifelong Learning Expo, and postings on the Jeonnam Talent Lifelong Education Promotion Foundation’s YouTube channel.

Ryu Hyuncheol, Director of the Education and Childcare Division, said, “Lifelong education is becoming important in the era of 100-year lifespans,” and added, “We will strive to discover and foster various programs tailored to the city’s characteristics so that all citizens can receive the learning they want anywhere.”

He added, “I also congratulate the clubs that worked hard throughout the year and achieved results.”

Meanwhile, the city plans to host the 3rd Jeollanam-do Lifelong Learning Expo in 2022, scheduled to be held over one night and two days around October or November next year.
