[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Three ports in Gyeongsangbuk-do have been selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Fishing Village New Deal 300 project for next year, and the project is expected to be launched in earnest.
The Fishing Village New Deal 300 project selects 300 ports, harbors, and fishing villages nationwide to expand essential infrastructure such as deteriorated piers in fishing villages. It aims to revitalize the local economy by promoting region-specific specialized development utilizing various resources.
Among 1,876 nationwide applicants, document evaluation, on-site evaluation, and comprehensive evaluation were conducted. In Gyeongbuk, Gagok Port in Gyeongju, Daejin 1 Port and Byeonggok Port in Yeongdeok, and Tonggumi Port in Ulleung were selected.
The project budget is 8.6 billion KRW for Gagok Port, 11 billion KRW for Daejin 1 Port and Byeonggok Port, and 9.8 billion KRW for Tonggumi Port, totaling 29.4 billion KRW. The total project cost will be finalized through basic plan review.
Until last year, 21 sites in the province were selected for this public project, with a total project cost of 188.4 billion KRW, of which 126 billion KRW has been invested up to this year.
The five sites selected in 2019 are scheduled for completion this year, with port infrastructure such as breakwaters and safety facilities being installed, and differentiated specialized development underway.
The eleven sites selected last year are under construction, and the five sites selected this year plan to establish the fishing port infrastructure starting in the first half of next year after completing the basic plan, laying the foundation for fishing village regeneration.
For the three newly selected sites, once the basic plan is established, priority will be given to regionally tailored living SOC projects to achieve policy effects that local residents can feel through infrastructure facilities necessary for daily life such as culture, welfare, parks, facilities, and transportation.
The province will also form the Gyeongsangbuk-do Fishing Village New Deal 300 Advisory Group to provide advice and consulting for the project sites.
Lee Young-seok, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau, said, “The continuous interest and participation of residents in the Fishing Village New Deal 300 project have led to results,” adding, “We will do our best to successfully establish the foundation for fishing village and port regeneration to revitalize the region.”
