Genians Highlights Network Security Amid 'Apartment Wallpad Hacking' Incident

[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Recently, news has emerged that private videos were leaked through hacking of the 월패드 (residential management terminal) in a famous domestic apartment, drawing attention to the information security specialist company Genieons.

Genians Highlights Network Security Amid 'Apartment Wallpad Hacking' Incident

According to the industry on the 7th, Genieons is reportedly discussing the development of security solutions related to Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as apartment 월패드. Genieons possesses NAC (Network Access Control), a corporate internal network security platform, and EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) solutions capable of proactive threat detection and infection path analysis.

Recently, personal private videos filmed through hacking of apartment 월패드 have been circulated online. The 월패드 is a smart device used for remote control of door locks, lighting, heating, and for checking external visitors. The camera attached to this device was manipulated to record videos.

The Ministry of Science and ICT suggested that home network device users set passwords and apply the latest security updates, and ordered apartment management offices to operate security equipment such as firewalls.

This kind of cybersecurity issue is gaining attention not only domestically but also overseas. According to the security industry, the number of ransomware attacks worldwide increased by 93% compared to the previous year. Moreover, these attacks have expanded to critical infrastructure such as the Colonial Pipeline in the United States and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, highlighting the importance of cybersecurity.

Accordingly, in Korea, led by the Ministry of Science and ICT, eight institutions including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute plan to establish dedicated information security organizations next year. Institutional support will also accompany this, such as allocating more than 15% of the information project budget to information security projects.

Genieons’ EDR solution has secured the largest number of customers domestically. Endpoints refer to the endpoints of network connections such as smartphones and PCs. This solution is a security technology that blocks IT viruses and has the function of detecting unknown threats. The market capitalization of CrowdStrike, a leading U.S. EDR company, reaches approximately 65 trillion KRW.

According to The Insight Partners, the global EDR market size is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 28.4%, from $2.16 billion this year to $5.87 billion by 2025.

Meanwhile, Genieons announced on the 2nd that it will actively expand its EDR business to XDR (Extended Detection and Response), an integrated security platform that detects, analyzes, and responds to threats across the entire IT environment including networks and clouds. XDR is a next-generation security platform that can build an integrated security system by detecting and responding to threats through expanded data collection and analysis, and providing a view of attack paths across security layers.
