Seoul City Selected as an Excellent Institution in Net Reduction Among 149 Metropolitan Area Organizations in 2020
Exceeded Reduction Targets in 2020 Public Sector Greenhouse Gas and Energy Target Management System... 34% Reduction Rate, 50,000 Tons Reduced
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 7th that it has been selected as an ‘Outstanding Institution for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Performance in 2020’ in the ‘2021 Public Sector Greenhouse Gas and Energy Target Management System’ evaluation and will receive the Minister of Environment Award.
Seoul City reduced greenhouse gases by 51,019 tCO2 with a reduction rate of 34.4%, ranking first in the metropolitan area for net reduction by region in 2020. This exceeded the reduction target rate of 30% and the reduction target amount of 44,540 tCO2.
Seoul City oversees the operation of the public sector greenhouse gas and energy target management system across 69 institutions and departments. Seoul City explained, "We analyzed the main causes of failure to meet reduction targets over the past five years and achieved the 2020 reduction target rate through sector-specific improvement efforts such as buildings, vehicles, and employee campaigns."
Among the 69 departments under Seoul City last year, the department that reduced the most greenhouse gases was the Administrative Bureau, which reduced 5,500 tons, exceeding the reduction target of 4,000 tons by 1,000 tons, achieving a reduction rate of 40%. The department with the highest greenhouse gas reduction rate in 2020 compared to 2019 was the Taxi Logistics Division of the Urban Transportation Office, improving the reduction rate from -14% to 58% year-on-year.
Additionally, the Boramae Safety Experience Center and the Western Road Office made significant contributions to greenhouse gas reduction by installing renewable energy facilities such as geothermal power generation equipment, improving building energy efficiency, replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with eco-friendly electric vehicles, and conducting energy-saving campaigns among all employees within the departments.
Meanwhile, Seoul City is expanding the spread of electric vehicles by supporting private building energy efficiency projects (BRP) and establishing a five-minute charging network in residential areas to reduce greenhouse gases.
Yoo Yeon-sik, Head of the Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, "We are very pleased that Seoul City was selected as an outstanding institution in the public sector greenhouse gas reduction performance evaluation," adding, "Seoul City will lead the spread of sensitive sectors through pioneering greenhouse gas reduction policies in the public sector."
